Screening for Prediabetes and Diabetes in Children and Adolescents
HUM00006955
We are conducting a research study to find out what tests are best able to detect diabetes and prediabetes in children and adolescents. This study is closed to enrollment at this time and we are no longer accepting new participants.
Who is eligible for this study?
- • Your child is 8 to 17 years of age AND has a risk factor for diabetes, including overweight with a BMI percentile at 85 or above
- • Your child previously participated in this study
- • Your child is 8 to 17 years of age and doesn't have a risk factor for diabetes but are willing to serve as a control subject
What will happen to me in this study?
-
If you decide to participate, the study requirements are described for each of the eligible groups of children:
Your child is 8 to 17 years of age AND has a risk factor for diabetes, including overweight
- • 4 separate visits to the Michigan Clinical Research Unit (MCRU) at the University of Michigan over a 4 month-5 year period.
- • Each visit will last anywhere from 1 ½ - 3 hours. Visits will be scheduled for the morning.
- • For 3 of the 4 visits, it is required that your child doesn’t eat anything 12 hours before the appointment.
- • At the visits, a medical history and physical exam will be performed on your child and a plastic tube (IV) to draw blood will be placed. Your child will be asked to drink a sugar solution and blood samples will be drawn 5 times. Your child will not have to be poked multiple times. You child will also be asked to provide a urine sample. You and your child will also be asked to fill out questionnaires about attitudes towards diabetes, stress, nutrition, sleep, physical activity, behavior, life events, cognitive function, and technology.
- • Also, there is an optional piece of the study to use phone and web technology to engage with the study staff.

How do I get more information about the study?
This study is closed to enrollment at this time and we are no longer accepting new participants. If you already enrolled in the study, you may find informed consent or informed assent (if you are a child between 10-17 years) to get more information. For healthy controls, there is a separate informed consent and assent (for children between 10-17 years).
The study does provide $50 gift cards for each visit to the Michigan Clinical Research Unit.
